ABOUT OUR PRESENTER
Looking back, it’s easy to see how Marc Zaccaria became a winemaker. He grew up in a wine-loving Italian family—they made their own blends to pair with daily meals and shared their passion for food and flavor with the younger generation. Marc embraced his family’s enthusiasm for the wine-and-food lifestyle, but he didn’t realize he could transform his interest into a career until he arrived at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with plans to major in Pre-Med with an emphasis in Pharmacy.
“I’m a science nerd who loves chemistry,” Marc says. “My path made sense at the time. But then I learned Enology was an actual major. My dad suggested I take an internship first. I worked at a lab during harvest on California’s Central Coast, and that was it. I switched majors and never looked back.”
Since his serendipitous discovery, Marc has put his skills to work for a variety of well-regarded wine companies. Prior to arriving at Rutherford Wine Company (RWC), Marc was Winemaker for Etude, where his focus was primarily world class Pinot Noir, alongside a few small-lot, single district Cabernet Sauvignons. He brings his ability to coax extraordinary flavors out of finicky grapes to his work at RWC.
“My work at Etude, as well as the many mentors I had the privilege of working with, informs everything I do in the winery,” he says. “My experience gave me the confidence to identify next steps for every varietal in my care and instilled in me a sense of urgency coupled with the importance of flawless planning. So many of my mentors were women winemakers as well, and they taught me the importance of precision, preparation, and partnership.”
Marc’s calm, competent leadership is evident throughout the winery. His careful strategies create consistent, ideal outcomes for his wines, but they also help maintain open communication andcollaboration with his team by honoring their expertise and understanding the importance of work/life balance.
“Our teamwork shows in every drop of Rutherford Wine Company wine,” he says. “From the Cellarmaster to the Assistant Winemaker, Vineyard Team, and our Lab Techs, every single professional I work with has a voice. We have the same goal: to create exceptional wines out of excellent fruit—and to celebrate the Napa Valley wine country lifestyle while we’re doing it.”
One of the reasons Marc believes he’s able to create such a compelling portfolio of wines is because RWC is family owned and operated. “It’s such a difference,” he says. “I can simply text the owners for feedback, and I know they are just as passionate as I am about these wines. Family owned wineries are becoming rarer with each vintage. The trust we’ve built is one of the highlights of my career, and it’s a privilege to work with the family, my team, and all the folks who support us to make a lineup of wines we are all extremely proud of.”
